2005 Fire Conclave Choreography
Backdrop

Beats are in 8-count. The backdrop line is divided into two halves, a left and a right, the ends of which will be marked with glow sticks on the playa.

  1. Forward roll, stalling backwards on beats 3&4, overhead (high) turn* on beats 5&6. Repeat 1x.

    * try to turn toward audience

  2. Forward weave for 8-count, standing in one place.

  3. Forward weave for 2 8-counts (ie, 16 total beats) while walking. The side of the line that is on stage RIGHT (to the left from the audience's

view) will always pass downstage (ie, closer to the audience). The stage left side will pass upstage.

  4. Backwards stall (2 beats), split hula (2 beats), backwards stall, split hula, backwards stall.

  5. Now's where it gets tricky.

If you are in the stage RIGHT section of the line, you will pull up into a "regular" windmill. Your right hand will lead; if you look up, the poi will appear to be moving in a counter-clockwise direction; the audience will see the poi moving clockwise. Coming over the top of the windmill, the poi will be moving toward the center of the line.

If you are in the stage LEFT section of the line, you will also being a windmill, but this one will be reversed in direction. Ie, left-hand-leading, clockwise if you look up, counter-clockwise from the audience's viewpoint. Most of us don't have a lot of practice with this one, but we will all need to know it.

  6. The windmill will go for 8 beats; on the 6/7 count, open up to a giant windmill.

  7. Come down from windmill into weave, facing the center of the line, and wrap your chains around your hand in preparation for . . .

  8. The buzzsaw! The rotation will be with the flames coming up under, so if our chains were too long we'd hit ourselves in the chin and not the forehead. We give up to a full 8-count to get here from the windmill, then hold for another 8-count.

  9. Pull out, go into a forward roll, and repeat from the top. There is no "home" count of 8 in between, so once you go back into the forward roll, you'll stall again on counts 3&4, turn on 5&6, etc.
